The YouTube Channel Handle, similar to the Channel ID, uniquely identifies a YouTube channel. Introduced in 2022, the Channel Handle serves as a more user-friendly identifier.

However, for data queries, it is recommended to use the Channel ID since Channel Handles can be changed by the channel owner up to twice every 14 days.

Why are there up to five different URLs for the same YouTube channel?

YouTube channels can have multiple URLs pointing to the same channel. Here are the official types of URLs YouTube provides:

  • Channel URL:
    Format: youtube.com/channel/UCkRfArvrzheW2E7b6SVT7vQ
    Linked directly to the channel’s unique Channel ID.
  • Handle URL:
    Format: youtube.com/@handle (e.g., youtube.com/@youtubecreators)
    Introduced in November 2022, this is the primary identifier for channels and is linked to the handle chosen by the creator.
  • Legacy Username URL:
    Format: youtube.com/user/username (e.g., youtube.com/user/youtubecreators)
    Previously tied to a channel’s username, this URL was automatically converted to point to the channel’s handle when handles were introduced. Usernames are now deprecated.
  • Custom URL:
    Format: youtube.com/c/username (e.g., youtube.com/c/youtubecreators)
    Custom URLs were tied to usernames and now redirect to the channel’s handle. New custom URLs can no longer be set up, and existing ones cannot be changed.
